Description:
Alexis Herman, the first black person to serve as a U.S. Secretary of Labor, and who was appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1997, died April 25 at age 77. In that role, she supported minimum wage increases, and successfully settled the UPS strike. Herman previously worked as director of the labor department's women's bureau. She also held roles at the Urban League and the Council of Negro Women, & championed diversity in government.
