Dr. William Foege, the public health physician who helped lead the global eradication of smallpox, died Jan 24 at age 89. Working with the World Health Organization and the CDC, Foege was a central architect of the surveillance and containment strategy that eliminated the disease worldwide. Foege later served as CDC director and remained a leading voice in global health policy. In 2012, Foege received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
