Description:
Poet, activist, author and professor, Nikki Giovanni, who wrote about race, politics, gender, died on Dec. 9 at 81. Giovanni was a prolific star of the Black Arts Movement, Over her career she wrote more than 30 books, and in 2006, won the Caldecott Honor Book Award for her children’s book on Rosa Parks. Giovanni taught English at Virginia Tech from 1987 until 2022. She is survived by her wife, one son and 1 granddaughter.
