Description:
Willie Colón, the iconic Nuyorican salsa musician, activist, and pioneering trombonist, died Feb 21 at age 75. Born William Anthony Colón Román in New York City, he became one of the architects of modern salsa, helping define the sound emerging from New York’s Puerto Rican communities in the 1960s and ’70s. A composer and bandleader, Colón shaped Latin music for generations. He is survived by his wife and four children.
