Louis Gossett Jr., who was the first black man to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, for “An Officer and a Gentleman”, died on March 29, 2024. He was 87. Gossett made his Broadway debut in 1953 at age 17. Gossett broke into film in the 1961 movie, “Raisin in the Sun.” Gossett’s career continued to thrive, and in 1977, he won an Emmy Award for his role in the TV mini-series, “Roots.’ Gossett continued to act until 2023.
