Description:
Maryse Condé, the Guadeloupean author of more than 20 novels, activist, and academic has died at 90. Condé wrote frankly of colonialism, sexuality and the black diaspora. She gained prominence as a contemporary Caribbean writer with her novel, Segu, in 1984. It was a bestseller and praised by the New York Times. Her last novel published in 2021, The Gospel According to the New World, was shortlisted for the International Booker prize.
