Philip Caputo, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author of the Vietnam memoir A Rumor of War became a landmark of modern wartime literature, died May 7 at 84. A former Marine lieutenant, Caputo drew on his experiences to write a personal account of combat, trauma, and moral disillusionment. Caputo later spent decades as a foreign correspondent and novelist, reporting from conflict zones around the world.
