Description:
Civil rights leader Hazel Dukes, known for her role as president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) from 1989-1992, died March 1 at 92. Dukes was appointed to then-President Lyndon Johnson's Head Start program in the 1960s. She continued to break barriers & in 1977 was elected to head the NAACP New York State Conference, a position she held until her death. Presidents, governors & mayors sought Dukes support
