Sierra Leone-born ballerina Michaela Mabinty DePrince, died Sept 13, at age 29. Orphaned from war, DePrince moved to the US with her adoptive mother in 1999. DePrince was repeatedly told black girls couldn’t be ballerinas. After attending the prestigious Rock School for Dance Education, her career included dancing with the Boston Ballet & performing with Beyonce in the video Lemonade. DePrince promoted the inclusion of black dancers in ballet.
