Description:
Philadelphian Francis Davis, the legendary Jazz critic known for his sharp ear for music’s cultural context, died April 14 at age 78. Davis was the jazz critic for The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Atlantic magazine and The Village Voice, as well as an author of 7 books, Davis won a Grammy award for his liner notes on the 50th anniversary reissue of Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue. Davis was married to Fresh Air host Terry Gross, for 20 years.
