Shigeichi Negishi, inventor of Karaoke, and maker of the first version of the karaoke machine in 1967, died on January 26. Originally called “Sparko Box,” named for the flashing lights, Negishi brought the box home to his family giving them a chance to sing. Never patenting the device, he attempted to sell Sparko Boxes to bars, hotels, restaurants and any other venue. By the end of his career, Negishi had sold around 8,000 devices.
