Description:
Jim Whittaker, the legendary mountaineer who became the first American to summit Mount Everest, died April 7 at age 97. Whittaker reached the peak in 1963 as part of a U.S. expedition and later led climbs on K2 and other major peaks. As CEO of REI, Whittaker helped expand the co-op and inspire a national embrace of outdoor adventure and mountaineering.
