Nancy “Lefty” Leftenant-Colon, the first black woman to join the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and who retired as a major, died on Jan. 8 at age 104. Leftenant-Colon broke down racial barriers during her long military career, initially joining the all-Black 332nd Fighter Group as a nurse in 1948 after the military was desegregated. She then joined the U.S. Air Force supporting the Korean & Vietnam wars.
