Description:

Dr. Bernard LaFayette, Jr., a civil rights leader who helped organize the early Selma voter registration campaign that led to the Voting Rights Act of 1965, died March 5 at age 85. A close ally of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and a Freedom Rider, he faced violence and an attempt on his life while working in Alabama. LaFayette later spent decades teaching and promoting the principles of nonviolent social change.
