Description:
Guns are a reappearing symbol and they represent power. When Tea Cake teaches Janie how to shoot, it shows that their love is different because he is not afraid of her becoming independent and more capable. Janie eventually is forced to shoot Tea Cake, and her use of the powerful gun shows that she is strong enough to be able to chose what is the right choice for her well being, even if it is difficult.
